Where it came from
Released by Decca Records in 1950, this single features Bing Crosby's rendition of the holiday standard Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The recording emerged during the peak of Crosby's career, when his collaborations with The Jud Conlon Rhythmaires were staples of American popular music. This specific catalog number, 9-27159, represents the transition period in the music industry as the industry shifted toward the 45 rpm format, though it maintained the cozy, orchestral pop aesthetic that defined Crosby’s seasonal recordings.
The song Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was penned by Johnny Marks, based on the poem by Robert L. May. By the time Crosby recorded it, the song had already become a cultural phenomenon following Gene Autry's 1949 hit version. Crosby’s interpretation leans into his signature warm, crooning style, intended to serve as a comforting family-oriented soundtrack for the holidays. It was widely received as a classic addition to the mid-century American Christmas songbook, cementing its status as an enduring seasonal staple.
