Where it came from
Released under the Fono-Ring label, this recording of Schubert’s Trout Quintet and Notturno features a period-informed ensemble led by pianist Jörg Demus. It emerged during a pivotal era of the mid-20th century when interest in historically informed performance practice began to gain traction, prompting musicians to explore the specific timbres and textures of instruments closer to those available in Schubert’s own time.
The recording is notable for its commitment to the aesthetic of the era, pairing Demus’s delicate, historically sensitive piano work with the string ensemble of Maier, Graf, Mandalka, and Breuer. The production aimed to strip away the heavy, Romanticized layers often applied to Schubert's chamber music in favor of a leaner, more translucent sound, finding favor among audiophiles and chamber music enthusiasts who valued the authenticity of the instrumental choices.
