The Reiner Sound

The Reiner Sound was originally recorded in 1957 and 1958 by RCA Victor at Chicago's Orchestra Hall, capturing Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the height of their technical prowess. Produced by Richard Mohr and engineered by Lewis Layton, the recording became a cornerstone of the Living Stereo era, prized for its dynamic range and precise spatial imaging. The 2005 reissue by Classic Records was part of an ambitious project to bring these seminal performances to audiophile-grade vinyl, utilizing high-resolution transfers to preserve the depth of the original analog master tapes.

The design of the Classic Records reissue was intended to be a faithful recreation of the original aesthetic, maintaining the iconic RCA Living Stereo label art while utilizing heavy-weight 180-gram or 200-gram vinyl pressings. This series was heavily influenced by the work of mastering engineer Bernie Grundman, who sought to maximize the sonic fidelity of the recordings for modern high-end playback systems. Upon release, the set was widely praised by the audiophile community for its ability to offer a clearer, more textured listening experience than standard commercial pressings, solidifying its status as a benchmark for orchestral recordings in the collector's market.
