The 1988 Bulgarian release of Michael Jackson's Thriller, issued by the state-owned label Balkanton, emerged during a period of shifting cultural policies within the Eastern Bloc. While the original album debuted globally in 1982, it was not until the late 1980s that Balkanton, the sole music publisher in Bulgaria at the time, began licensing and pressing Western pop records for domestic distribution. Cataloged as VTA 11703, this edition served as a landmark for local fans, marking a rare official entry of contemporary American music into the state-controlled record market.

The design of this specific release adheres to the functional, utilitarian aesthetic characteristic of Balkanton pressings from the era. Given the limitations of domestic printing infrastructure, the cover art was often reproduced with distinct color grading and typography compared to Western counterparts. Although the music remains the definitive global production by Quincy Jones, the Balkan-manufactured sleeve reflects the regional production constraints and the historic transition toward broader accessibility of international media in late-Cold War Bulgaria.
