Where it came from
Released in 1981 on the independent Impulse Records label, this 45 RPM single represents a distinct artifact of the post-disco and early independent funk era. The release served as a vehicle for Van Jones to explore themes of personal transformation and social identity, capturing a sound that bridged the gap between traditional rhythm and blues production and the burgeoning DIY aesthetic of the early 1980s underground music scene.
The record was produced to showcase Jones's vocal versatility, utilizing the stylistic tropes of contemporary funk while maintaining the raw, unpolished energy characteristic of its regional label origins. While the release remains a niche item for collectors of rare soul and funk, its design and production reflect the period's experimental approach to independent soul music, functioning as an authentic document of a self-distributed artist finding his creative voice during a transitional decade in music history.
