Where it came from
Released in 1981 by the Dutch label Telstar, this record captures the specific musical culture of the Venlo-Zuid district during the lead-up to the 1982 carnival season. The album features a collection of local artists performing regional carnival songs, reflecting the deep-rooted tradition of Vastelaovend in the province of Limburg, where community-based music remains central to the annual festivities.
The production serves as a time capsule for the 'Boëte de Paort' (Outside the Gate) movement, a term denoting the local identity of Venlo neighborhoods located outside the historical city center. Designed for a niche audience of residents and regional folk enthusiasts, the record highlights the distinctive dialect and acoustic arrangements characteristic of the era's local carnival scene, serving more as a cultural artifact of municipal pride than a mainstream commercial release.
