Where it came from
This recording, released by the Musical Heritage Society in 1993, highlights a specific set of concertos attributed to the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, where Vivaldi composed extensively for his students, including the renowned virtuoso Anna Maria. The project features Shlomo Mintz both as soloist and conductor, directing the Israel Chamber Orchestra to capture the technical demand and lyrical grace required by these particular manuscripts.
The album reflects a broader 1990s movement in classical music toward revisiting lesser-known Vivaldi concertos through high-fidelity, nuanced performances. Mintz sought to emphasize the personal connection between Vivaldi and his pupils, opting for a style that balances historically informed phrasing with a modern, emotive interpretative approach. Critics of the time generally praised the collaboration for its crisp articulation and the sympathetic interplay between the soloist and the chamber ensemble.
