Vrijmoedige Verzen Van Vagebond Villon

Released in 1961 on the Delta label, Vrijmoedige Verzen Van Vagebond Villon represents a distinct effort to translate the medieval French poetry of François Villon into accessible, modern Dutch. Ernst van Altena, a prominent Dutch translator and chanson singer known for bringing international lyrical works to Dutch audiences, sought to capture the gritty, rebellious spirit of Villon's original verses rather than focusing solely on academic precision.

The album reflects the mid-century European interest in reviving classical literary figures through spoken word and musical accompaniment. Van Altena's approach was intended to strip away the stiff formality often associated with medieval translations, emphasizing the raw, autobiographical quality of Villon's life as an outcast and poet. The release was well-regarded among Dutch literary circles for successfully bridging the gap between historical literature and the contemporary chanson tradition.
