Wade In The Water / Walk With Me

Released in 1968 on the independent WS Records label, this 45-rpm single by The Whispering Spirits captures the transition of gospel-infused soul during the late 1960s. The record emerged from a regional scene characterized by small-scale, artist-driven imprints that sought to capture the raw energy of vocal groups performing in church and community hall circuits. It serves as a historical document of the era's DIY production aesthetic, where limited budgets often resulted in an intimate, unvarnished sound that differed significantly from the polished arrangements dominating the mainstream R&B charts.

The design and arrangement of this release reflect the group's desire to marry traditional spiritual repertoire with the burgeoning soul sensibilities of the period. While The Whispering Spirits remained a localized act, their interpretation of these standards was intended to resonate with audiences familiar with contemporary folk-gospel hybrids. The record was received primarily as a modest local offering, remaining largely obscure to national audiences, but it is now appreciated by collectors for its authenticity and the unfiltered capture of the vocal group's performance style.
