Where it came from
Released in 1980 on the independent Suff Records label, this record captures the specific atmosphere of Hamburg's St. Pauli district during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The album functions as a time capsule of the Safari, a legendary venue located on the Große Freiheit, which was known for its mix of cabaret, striptease, and unfiltered humor. By recording these sets, the label aimed to preserve the raw, localized comedy style that defined the nightlife of the Reeperbahn era.
The album is credited to Bernd P. Weinstein, a performer embedded in the local scene who utilized the gritty, transgressive aesthetic of the district to build his comedic persona. The design and production reflect the DIY nature of the underground German cabaret scene of the time, focusing on a direct, unpolished transmission of the stage experience to listeners. It serves as a documentary artifact of a pre-gentrification St. Pauli, standing as a testament to the club culture that relied on intimate, audience-responsive humor.
