Where it came from
Released in 1956 by Polydor, this extended play record represents a mid-century effort to revive the nostalgic appeal of Walter Kollo’s operettas and revues for a post-war West German audience. Kollo was a central figure in Berlin’s light musical theatre scene during the early 20th century, and this compilation sought to repackage his familiar, upbeat compositions through the contemporary talent of the mid-fifties, featuring popular schlager singers and vocal ensembles of the era.
The record’s design follows the standard aesthetic of the Polydor EPH series, focusing on a clean, functional presentation that highlighted the diverse roster of performers rather than a singular artistic vision. The inclusion of figures like Maria Mucke and Gerhard Wendland reflects the label's strategy of utilizing established radio and recording stars to anchor the project, ensuring the revue reached listeners who favored traditional German light entertainment over the emerging influence of American rock and roll.
