Wortwechsel was released in 1991 by the small independent label Rillenschlange, a project led by the singer-songwriter and physician Karl-Heinz Bomberg. The album emerged from the unique cultural context of post-reunification Germany, reflecting the personal and collective transition experienced by those who had lived under the political pressures of the former German Democratic Republic. Bomberg, who had been a prominent figure in the East German songwriter scene, used his music to process themes of surveillance, psychological resilience, and the complexities of finding one's voice in a shifting political landscape.
