Where it came from
Released in 1973 under the M label, this single is a quintessential example of the German Schlager and novelty music scene of the early 1970s. The track, titled 'Wo sind die Bananen', capitalizes on the lighthearted, often humorous approach to pop music that characterized the era, aiming to provide entertainment for television variety shows and local radio broadcasts during a period when whimsical songs frequently climbed the West German charts.
The recording features the work of Jürgen und die Clochards, a group that operated within the broader landscape of independent German music production. While specific design credits for the sleeve art remain obscure, the aesthetic reflects the standard low-budget marketing practices of the time, utilizing colorful, attention-grabbing imagery to attract consumers in record shops. The release was received as a niche novelty product, serving as a snapshot of the cultural fascination with catchy, simple melodies that dominated popular German airwaves during the early 1970s.
