Where it came from
Released in 1976 on Philadelphia International Records, this single served as the lead track for Lou Rawls's career-revitalizing album All Things in Time. Produced by the legendary team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, the song was crafted to bridge the gap between traditional soul sensibilities and the sophisticated, lush arrangements of the Philly soul sound. It marked a pivotal commercial comeback for Rawls, securing his status as a premier vocalist during the disco era by leaning into a romantic, mid-tempo groove.
The composition was a collaborative effort between Gamble and Huff, who aimed to showcase Rawls’s rich, baritone delivery against a polished orchestral backdrop. Upon its release, the record was met with significant critical and commercial acclaim, eventually reaching the top of the R&B charts and crossing over to reach the upper echelons of the Billboard Hot 100. Its success established the Philadelphia International sound as a dominant force in 1970s popular music, cementing the track as a quintessential standard of the genre.
