Zuki-Zaki

Zuki-Zaki was released in 1974 on the Dip label, a product of the prolific Jamaican producer Winston 'Niney' Holness. Coming out of the height of the roots reggae era, this track showcases the signature heavy, stripped-back production style that earned Niney his reputation as an innovative sound engineer and producer. The recording features the Niney All Stars, a revolving collective of top-tier session musicians who provided the rhythmic foundation for many of the most influential songs to emerge from the Kingston studios during the mid-1970s.

The composition reflects the creative experimentation common in Jamaican studio sessions of the time, where producers and engineers treated the mixing board as a primary instrument. Niney was known for his distinct, bass-heavy aesthetic and his ability to draw raw, emotive performances from artists. While the Niney All Stars records were primarily utilitarian tools for sound system selectors, they were well-received within the local dancehall circuit and have since become sought-after artifacts for collectors interested in the evolution of dub and roots reggae production techniques.
