Where it came from
The Army Ant token was released as part of the POGs craze in the mid-1990s, a collecting phenomenon that swept schoolyards and hobby shops across North America. Born from a 1920s Hawaiian milk cap game, the modern iteration gained immense popularity as manufacturers like the World POG Federation produced vibrant, stylized cardboard discs featuring a wide variety of pop-culture, military, and animal-themed imagery to cater to a demographic of young, competitive collectors.
The design of the Army Ant token reflects the era's affinity for anthropomorphic insect motifs and high-contrast, bold graphic art. Illustrators during this period often utilized simplistic, punchy aesthetics intended to stand out in a physical stack or 'slammer' battle. While these tokens were produced in high volume as mass-market novelty items, they remain a quintessential touchstone for the mid-90s gaming boom and the ephemeral nature of childhood collecting fads.
