Chaofeng, Phantom of the Yang Zing

Chaofeng, Phantom of the Yang Zing was released in 2015 as part of the Crossed Souls booster set. The Yang Zing archetype introduced a unique playstyle to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game centered on the concept of floating, where monsters were replaced by others from the deck upon destruction. As a high-level Synchro monster, Chaofeng was designed to serve as the archetype's apex, acting as a disruptive force that limits the opponent's ability to activate effects based on the attributes of the materials used for its summon.

The creature's design draws heavily from Chinese mythology, specifically the concept of the nine offspring of the dragon. Chaofeng, the second son, is traditionally associated with adventure and danger, often depicted on the corners of roofs to ward off evil. The card’s illustration reflects this mythological influence through its intricate, serpentine aesthetic and elemental motifs, which were crafted to distinguish the Yang Zing from other Wyrm-type monster series introduced during the same era.
