Dark Energy was released as part of the original Starter Deck: Kaiba in 2002, serving as a foundational spell card in the early Western rollout of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. It was designed to support the Fiend-type monsters prominent in Seto Kaiba's deck, providing a modest 300-point attack and defense boost to specific monsters. This release capitalized on the popularity of the anime, where such cards helped establish the strategic identity of iconic characters for new players.

The card features artwork consistent with the early aesthetic of the game, characterized by a gothic, elemental visual style that became synonymous with the Fiend and Dark-attribute archetypes. Like many common cards from the initial starter decks, it was intended as an accessible utility piece for beginners.
