Des Volstgalph was originally released in the Japanese booster set Pharaoh's Servant in 2000, during the early years of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. It was designed as a high-level effect monster featuring a distinct aesthetic that blends gothic and biomechanical elements, typical of the card designs from the series' creator, Kazuki Takahashi. The monster's effect, which gains attack points when other cards are destroyed, reflected the game's shift toward more aggressive, reactive combat strategies.

The 2009 Gold Series release, identified by the card number GLD2-EN002, brought the card to a wider audience with a premium aesthetic upgrade. Gold Series sets were notable for their unique gold-colored card borders and holographic foil lettering, designed to give standard cards a collectible, luxury appearance. This version remains a notable piece of mid-era game history, representing the bridge between the original card game mechanics and the increasingly complex strategies introduced in later years.
