Where it came from
Exchange of the Spirit was originally released as a Secret Rare in the 2002 Pharaoh's Servant expansion. The card was designed as a high-impact trap representing the signature strategy of the antagonist Ishizu Ishtar from the Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series. Mechanically, it was intended to facilitate a total swap of graveyards between players, a concept that fundamentally altered the flow of resource management in the game at the time.
The Magnificent Mavens printing of the card, appearing as an Ultra Rare in 2022, serves as a modern reprint for this legacy staple. The design reflects a long history of errata, as the card's original text proved so powerful that it was banned from tournament play for many years. When it was finally re-released with updated, restrictive activation conditions, it was received primarily as a collector's piece and a nostalgic nod to the early competitive era of the game.
