Feral Imp

The Feral Imp was released in 2002 as part of the Starter Deck: Yugi, the inaugural Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game product launched in North America by Upper Deck. This set was designed to introduce new players to the mechanics of the game, featuring a curated selection of cards that mirrored the deck used by the protagonist Yugi Muto in the early episodes of the television series. The inclusion of Feral Imp was intended to provide a low-level, high-defense monster that players could use to stabilize their field during the early stages of a duel.

The card features an illustration characteristic of the early Kazuki Takahashi era, emphasizing a dark, gothic aesthetic that defined many of the early Fiend-type monsters. As a common card within a mass-produced starter deck, its design was meant for broad accessibility rather than rarity, serving as a staple utility card for beginners. Despite its lack of special effects, it remains a nostalgic artifact for long-time players, representing the foundational design philosophy that prioritized straightforward combat and defensive play in the game’s first year.
