Gashadokuro, the Skeletal Mayakashi

Gashadokuro, the Skeletal Mayakashi was released as part of the 2022 Magnificent Mavens set, a special supplementary product for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. The card is based on the Gashadokuro, a mythical creature from Japanese folklore depicted as a giant skeleton formed from the accumulated bones of people who died in battle or starvation, representing the collective rage of those unburied. This design choice aligns with the Mayakashi archetype, which draws heavily from the yōkai legends of Japanese tradition, utilizing a distinctive graveyard-based synchro summoning strategy.

The card’s artwork was developed by Konami’s internal design team, following the aesthetic standards established by the archetype’s debut in the Hidden Summoners set. The illustration emphasizes the towering, spectral nature of the monster to convey its role as a high-level boss creature within its engine. Upon its release, the card was received primarily by competitive players and those interested in archetype-specific support, as the Magnificent Mavens set was widely praised for reprinting essential staples alongside new support for existing themes like the Mayakashi.
