The set was designed to introduce a series of monsters based on various supernatural creatures from global folklore, with the Ghostrick monsters characterized by their unique ability to flip themselves face-down to evade threats or activate effects. Jiangshi specifically draws inspiration from the Chinese hopping vampire, often depicted in regional cinema with a paper talisman attached to its forehead, a design element captured in the card's illustration to blend horror motifs with the franchise's playful art style.

The 2022 release of the card in the Ghosts From the Past: The 2nd Haunting collection marked a re-issue of this monster as an ultra-rare variant. This particular set was curated to provide players with access to older, niche archetype staples while featuring the distinct holographic foiling process typical of the series.
