Provenance

Where it came from

Gilford the Lightning was first introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in the Pharaoh's Servant expansion in 2002. Designed as a high-level warrior monster, the card draws inspiration from classic fantasy aesthetics, emphasizing the character's ability to clear the opponent's field of monsters through a powerful lightning-based effect. The artwork, characterized by the warrior's imposing stance and crackling energy, reflects the period's focus on dramatic monster designs intended to serve as formidable field presence in competitive play.

The Speed Duel: Attack from the Deep release, which includes the SBAD-EN008 print, represents a modernization effort by Konami to introduce legacy cards into the faster-paced Speed Duel format. By reissuing Gilford the Lightning as an Ultra Rare in this specific set, the designers aimed to provide players with a nostalgic yet functional option that maintains the original card's strategic identity while adapting its viability for a more streamlined game structure.
