Gravekeeper's Chief

Gravekeeper's Chief debuted in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game as part of the Dark Revelation Volume 1 set, released in 2005. This set functioned as a compilation, gathering cards previously released in individual expansion packs like Magician's Force to make them more accessible to the player base. The Gravekeeper archetype, centered around the 'Necrovalley' field spell, was designed to control the graveyard—a key tactical element in the game’s meta at the time—by restricting players from manipulating cards in their opponent's discard pile.

The art and mechanical design for the Gravekeeper series were produced by Konami’s internal creative teams, drawing heavily on archetypal motifs of desert guardians and ancient Egyptian tomb protectors. Gravekeeper's Chief was specifically envisioned as the high-level support monster of the group, offering the ability to tribute summon a monster while protecting other Gravekeeper cards from being targeted or destroyed. It was generally received as a cornerstone of dedicated Gravekeeper control decks, valued for its ability to maintain board presence through its unique self-protection effects.
