Provenance

Where it came from

The Illusionist Faceless Mage first appeared in the Metal Raiders expansion, the second major set released for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in early 2002. As a core component of the early TCG lineup, this set was instrumental in expanding the card pool beyond the initial Starter Decks, introducing a variety of dark-themed spellcasters and demons that defined the aesthetic of the game's formative years.

The card features an unsettling, cloak-clad figure typical of the game's early dark-fantasy art direction. Like many common-rarity normal monsters from this period, it was designed primarily to fill out the deck-building options for players, serving as a low-level filler card. Its design reflects the gothic, macabre illustrations that characterized the early Konami releases, which leaned heavily into occult imagery and mysterious, nameless entities.
