Jiaotu, Darkness of the Yang Zing was originally introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in 2014 as part of the 'Duelist Alliance' core set. The card represents a key component of the Yang Zing archetype, a group of Wyrm-type monsters themed after the Nine Sons of the Dragon from Chinese mythology. This particular card is based on the Jiaotu, a creature known for its resemblance to a clam and its protective nature, which the designers translated into the game's mechanics by allowing the player to discard cards to special summon other Yang Zing monsters from the deck.

The 2015 Mega-Tin Mega Pack, which included this ultra-rare reprint (MP15-EN151), was released to provide players with more accessible versions of high-demand cards from the previous year. The design of the Yang Zing cards features intricate, sweeping artwork that emphasizes their elemental connection to the battlefield.
