King of Yamimakai

King of Yamimakai was released in the Metal Raiders booster set, the second expansion in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game line. Introduced to Western audiences in 2002, this set significantly expanded the game's mechanics by introducing Counter Trap cards and a wider variety of monsters. The card, a Level 5 Fiend-type monster, was designed as a thematic successor to the earlier, simpler monsters found in the Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon set, intended to provide players with more aggressive options for their decks during the game's early competitive life.

The card features artwork consistent with the macabre and gothic aesthetic favored by the game's original illustrators during the late 1990s. While common in rarity, the card reflects the dark fantasy motifs common to the series' early development under Kazuki Takahashi. It was well-received by players at the time as a functional, if unspectacular, tribute monster that filled a specific role in Dark-attribute decks before the game's power creep necessitated more complex and efficient monster effects.
