Needle Worm first appeared in the early years of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, a product of Konami's expansion into the global market. As part of the Tournament Pack series, specifically Tournament Pack 5 released in the early 2000s, this card was distributed as a promotional incentive for participating in official organized play. These packs were designed to bridge the gap between standard retail sets and the competitive scene, offering rare foil variants of cards that were otherwise difficult for players to acquire.

The card features an illustration by the original Konami design team, depicting a segmented, insectoid creature capable of discarding the top five cards of an opponent's deck.
