Number 84: Pain Gainer

Number 84: Pain Gainer was originally released in the Japanese set Number Hunters in 2013, later appearing in the English TCG as part of the Premium Gold: Infinite Gold set in 2016. As a Rank 11 Xyz Monster, it was designed to function within the thematic framework of the Barian Emperor’s 'Number' cards, which were central to the narrative of the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime series. The card mechanics emphasize a high-risk, high-reward strategy that utilizes material overlay to survive destruction while inflicting damage to the opponent.

The visual design of the card reflects the aesthetic shift seen in the Premium Gold series, which introduced a distinct gold border and gold-colored card text to signify its rarity. Illustrated by the creative team at Konami, the artwork for Pain Gainer features an intricate, mechanized insectoid form that leans into the darker, more aggressive visual motifs common to the Rank 10 and Rank 11 Xyz monsters of the era. Upon its release, it was noted by players primarily for its utility as a bridge to summon more powerful monsters like Number 77: The Seven Sins.
