Pot of Desires was first introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in 2016 within the Maximum Crisis booster set. It quickly became a staple in competitive play due to its powerful ability to provide card advantage, allowing a player to draw two cards at the cost of banishing the top ten cards of their deck face-down. This high-risk, high-reward mechanic fundamentally shifted deck-building strategies, as players had to carefully weigh the potential for a depleted deck against the necessity of immediate resources.

The 2017 Mega-Tins, released the following year, sought to make high-profile competitive cards more accessible to the broader player base by featuring them as reprints. The Ultra Rare printing in the CT14-EN004 set utilized the standard aesthetic of the game's spell cards, featuring the iconic design of a swirling, mystical vessel. While the card's artwork has remained consistent, its reputation evolved over time as the metagame grew more focused on managing resources in the banish zone, solidifying its status as a defining card of its era.
