Provenance

Where it came from

The Princess of Tsurugi was released in 2002 as part of the Starter Deck: Joey, one of the foundational products that introduced the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game to Western audiences. Designed to replicate the deck used by the character Joey Wheeler in the animated series, the inclusion of this card served to bolster the set's lineup of effect monsters, providing players with an early example of direct burn damage mechanics.

The card's design features an illustration typical of the era's early monster cards, reflecting the fantasy-warrior aesthetic that defined the game's initial visual identity. As a common card in a high-volume starter deck, it was never intended for high-level competitive play but remains a nostalgic touchstone for early collectors who remember the specific card pool available during the game's initial North American expansion.
