Where it came from
The Red-Eyes Black Dragon from the Starter Deck: Joey was released in 2003 as part of Konami's North American launch of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. Designed to capture the popularity of the character Joey Wheeler from the animated series, the deck provided players with a pre-constructed collection that mirrored the protagonist's signature card. The card features a distinct aesthetic characterized by its dark, menacing artwork, intended to contrast with the more virtuous-looking Blue-Eyes White Dragon.
Kazuki Takahashi, the creator of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, designed the card to represent raw, untapped potential rather than the refined power of other legendary dragons. The Ultra Rare printing in this set holds a significant place in the hobby, as it was one of the first opportunities for many players to own this iconic monster. It was well-received by fans for its direct connection to the series' lore and remains a foundational piece for collectors focused on the early years of the game.
