Provenance

Where it came from

The Phantom Knights of Shadow Veil was released in the 2014 Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game expansion The New Challengers. This set served as the introduction for the Phantom Knights archetype, a group of warrior-type monsters associated with the character Yuto from the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V animated series. The card was designed to support the playstyle of the archetype, which focuses on graveyard recursion and summoning Rank-Up-Magic Xyz monsters.

The design of the card reflects the dark, spectral aesthetic of the Phantom Knights theme, utilizing heavy contrast and deep shadows to convey their undead nature. As a common rarity card within the set, it was primarily intended to function as a accessible utility trap card for players building decks around the new archetype. The card received modest attention upon release for its defensive capabilities and its ability to summon itself as a monster, contributing to the broader synergy of the Phantom Knights strategy.
