Where it came from
The Phantom Knights of Torn Scales was introduced in the 2020 booster set Phantom Rage as a core support card for the Phantom Knights archetype. This archetype, first appearing in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V animated series, centers on a dark, spectral aesthetic combined with high-utility graveyard effects. Designed to bolster the consistency of decks centered around Rank 3 and Rank 4 Xyz monsters, the card was conceptualized to provide both hand-discard utility and graveyard recursion, quickly becoming a staple in competitive play.
The card features artwork consistent with the series' signature gothic, warrior-based aesthetic, emphasizing muted purple tones and skeletal motifs. As a Secret Rare, it was produced with the high-quality foiling process characteristic of its rarity tier, which made it highly sought after by collectors and tournament players alike. Upon its release, it was lauded by the community for effectively modernizing the strategy and giving the Phantom Knights a powerful new engine for board development.
