Umi

Umi, released as a common spell card in the 2002 Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon set, serves as one of the foundational field spells in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. Debuting in the first North American expansion, the card was designed to simulate the mechanics of the original Japanese manga and anime series, where terrain effects played a significant role in determining the strength of specific monsters.

The card’s design features a minimalist depiction of a surging ocean, reflecting the game's early aesthetic approach that prioritized simple, iconic imagery. While it possesses relatively basic utility compared to later, more complex field spells, Umi remains a significant piece of trading card history as it established the precedent for environmental cards that buff aquatic-type monsters while simultaneously weakening others on the field.
