Upstart Goblin

Upstart Goblin was originally introduced in the early years of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, designed as a simple yet impactful spell card that allows the player to draw one card at the cost of giving their opponent 1000 life points. This design philosophy focuses on the concept of deck thinning, a strategic choice that prioritizes card advantage and drawing into key combo pieces by reducing the effective size of the deck, even at the expense of a minor resource disadvantage.

The Retro Pack series, which includes the RP01-EN056 printing, was developed by Konami to provide players with accessible reprints of older, historically significant cards that had become difficult to obtain. While the original artwork features a whimsical, goblin-like merchant character, the card's enduring legacy is defined by its role in competitive play, where it has frequently moved between unrestricted and limited status on official tournament ban lists due to its powerful efficiency in combo-heavy strategies.
