Where it came from
The Ushi Oni card was released in 2002 as part of a promotional collaboration between Konami and McDonald's to bolster the popularity of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in North America. This specific set was distributed within Happy Meal packages, offering younger players an accessible entry point into the game. The inclusion of these cards reflected a strategic push to bridge the gap between fast-food consumerism and the burgeoning craze for Japanese collectible card games during the early 2000s.
The card features the Ushi Oni monster, a design derived from Japanese folklore representing a creature with the head of an ox and the body of a spider. The artwork maintains the dark, intricate aesthetic typical of the game's early monster designs, intended to evoke a sense of menace and intrigue. While these common promotional cards were printed in significant quantities, they remain notable to collectors for their unique set prefix and their role in the initial expansion of the trading card game culture outside of traditional hobby shops.
