Provenance

Where it came from

The Yu-Jo Friendship card was released as part of the Shonen Jump magazine subscription program in May 2006. It represents a meta-commentary on the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, as its artwork depicts the series protagonists Yugi Muto and Joey Wheeler joining hands. This card is famously designed to force a handshake between opponents, leaning into the lighthearted, friendship-driven themes prevalent in the original manga.

The card was illustrated with a distinct aesthetic that mirrors the dramatic character design of Kazuki Takahashi's work. While its effect is impractical for high-level competitive play, it remains a sought-after piece for collectors due to its status as a promotional item tied to the peak of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga serialization in the West. Its release cemented it as a nostalgic artifact from the early promotional era of the card game.
