21 Emon Uchuu e Irasshai!

Released in 1981, 21 Emon: Uchuu e Irasshai! served as the first theatrical film adaptation of Fujiko F. Fujio’s science fiction manga series. The story centers on Emon, the son of a hotel owner in the 21st century who dreams of traveling through space rather than managing the family business. Produced by Shin-Ei Animation, the film captured the whimsical and slightly satirical tone of the original work, which explored the intersection of futuristic technology and relatable human ambition.

The design of the film relies on the signature aesthetic of Fujiko F. Fujio, characterized by expressive, rounded character silhouettes and imaginative, colorful planetary environments. The animation was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, whose approach emphasized fluid movement and comedic timing. Upon its release, the film was well-received by fans of the manga and children’s television audiences, cementing 21 Emon as a cult favorite within the broader landscape of early 1980s Japanese animation.
