Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2017 to coincide with the second season of the anime adaptation of Chica Umino’s manga, 3-gatsu no Lion: Ugoku! Nya Shogi serves as a specialized, animated companion piece focused on teaching the rules of shogi. Produced by Studio Shaft, the project reflects the series' commitment to integrating the intellectual rigors of the board game with the whimsical, cat-inspired mascot aesthetic that permeates Umino’s work.

The animation features the series' signature visual style, characterized by surrealist compositions and sharp character designs that define Shaft’s directorial approach under Akiyuki Shinbo. By utilizing the 'Nya Shogi' characters—anthropomorphic cats representing various shogi pieces—the content aims to distill complex tactical concepts into an approachable format for fans of the franchise, successfully bridging the gap between high-stakes competitive drama and educational entertainment.
