Where it came from
919 is an experimental animated short film produced by students and faculty at the Tokyo University of the Arts, widely known as Geidai. This project emerged from the university’s renowned animation department, which emphasizes individual artistic expression and traditional craftsmanship alongside modern digital techniques. It serves as a testament to the institution's commitment to nurturing independent creative voices within the Japanese animation landscape, focusing on abstract visual storytelling rather than conventional commercial narrative structures.
The film is characterized by a minimalist aesthetic and a deliberate pace, reflecting the minimalist tendencies often explored in the Geidai curriculum. The design choices prioritize atmosphere and psychological resonance over character-driven action, a hallmark of the department's collaborative workshops. Upon its exhibition in academic and independent animation circles, it was noted for its technical precision and its willingness to challenge the viewer's perception of time and space, standing as a significant example of the university’s influence on the avant-garde animation movement.
