Set in a city of scientifically advanced superhuman students, but in a world where magic is also real. Touma Kamijou’s right hand, the Imagine Breaker, will negate all magic, psychic, or divine powers, but not his own bad luck. One day he finds a young girl hanging on his balcony railing. She turns out to be a nun from the Church of England, and her mind has been implanted with the Index-Librorum-Prohibitorum - all the magical texts the Church has removed from circulation.

Where it came from
A Certain Magical Index was adapted for television by J.C.Staff in 2008, drawing directly from the light novel series authored by Kazuma Kamachi. The story emerged during a period of significant growth for the light novel medium in Japan, blending urban fantasy, science fiction, and action. The production sought to capture the series' intricate world-building, which juxtaposes a technologically advanced academy city against the hidden world of magic, necessitating a distinct visual language to differentiate the two domains.
The character designs were adapted for animation by Yuichi Tanaka, who aimed to maintain the essence of Kiyotaka Haimura’s original light novel illustrations while making them suitable for the fluid demands of a long-running television series. Upon its release, the adaptation was well received for its dense narrative structure and ensemble cast. It played a pivotal role in establishing the popularity of the broader A Certain franchise, leading to multiple sequels, spin-offs, and a dedicated international following.
