Where it came from
A-Channel+smile was released in 2012 as an original video animation produced by Studio Gokumi and licensed by Aniplex. It serves as a direct follow-up to the 2011 television anime adaptation of bb Kuroda’s four-panel manga series, which follows the daily lives and comedic interactions of a close-knit group of high school girls. The production was conceived to extend the lighthearted, slice-of-life atmosphere established in the original series, focusing on the character dynamics that fans of the franchise had come to enjoy.
The project retains the core creative team from the television series, including director Manabu Okamoto, who sought to maintain the series' signature aesthetic characterized by vibrant colors and expressive, rounded character designs. Upon its release, the OVA was well-received by the existing audience of the anime, praised for staying faithful to the relaxed, episodic humor of the source material while providing a polished visual experience that resonated with the aesthetic expectations of the 2010s moe-subgenre.
