Where it came from
A Chinese Ghost Story: The Tsui Hark Animation, released in 1997, represents a significant stylistic departure for the classic Hong Kong folklore tale. Produced by Tsui Hark’s Film Workshop, the project sought to translate the iconic supernatural romance into the medium of traditional cel animation. By blending the established fantasy aesthetic of the 1987 live-action film with experimental animation techniques, the studio aimed to capture the ethereal, ghostly atmosphere of the original Pu Songling short story through a more stylized and fluid visual language.
The film was directed by Andrew Chan, with Tsui Hark providing the conceptual framework and creative direction. The production utilized a mix of traditional hand-drawn animation supplemented by early digital effects to depict the shifting environments of the spirit world. Upon its release, it was noted for its ambitious visual composition and its attempt to modernize a cultural touchstone. While it received a mixed critical reception for its departure from the live-action tone, it remains a notable experiment in Hong Kong’s late-nineties animation landscape.
