Where it came from
A Dark Rabbit has Seven Lives, or Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi, originated as a light novel series by Takaya Kagami before being adapted into an anime by studio ZEXCS in 2011. This OVA was produced as a supplemental release, expanding upon the supernatural, high-school mystery narrative centered on Taito Kurogane and his connection to the vampire Himea Saito. The project was conceived during a period when ZEXCS was actively exploring complex, darker-toned light novel adaptations, aiming to blend typical school-life comedy tropes with more intense, metaphysical stakes.
The character design and visual direction were intended to maintain the stylistic consistency of the main television series, emphasizing the contrast between the mundane classroom environment and the grim reality of the protagonist's recurring death-defying cycles. While the franchise as a whole garnered a dedicated following among light novel enthusiasts for its convoluted plot and dark aesthetic, the OVA functioned primarily as fan service for those already invested in the series' specific character dynamics and lore.
