Where it came from
A drop of dew, or 'Shizuku', was released in 2006 as a standalone original video animation by Toei Animation. It emerged during a period when Toei was diversifying its portfolio to include more experimental, emotionally resonant short-form storytelling outside of their traditional long-running shonen franchises. The production was conceived as a gentle, atmospheric meditation on nature and the passage of time, prioritizing mood and minimalist visual language over complex narrative structures.
The aesthetic of the project reflects the studio's attempt to capture a painterly, hand-drawn warmth that contrasted with the increasing digital sharpness of mid-2000s animation. Designed with a focus on subtle character movement and the interplay of light and water, the work was received by audiences as a quiet, contemplative piece of craftsmanship. It remains a minor but respected entry in the studio's expansive filmography, celebrated by those who favor understated artistic expression over conventional commercial appeal.
