A Place Where There Are Moths depicts the conflict between drab concrete block apartment living and the natural environment in Japanese cities. The forces of nature are represented by the motif of a tree whose leaves metamorphose into orange moths and take over a middle-aged woman's apartment, pushing her room higher and higher within the building.

Where it came from
A Place Where There Are Moths is a 1992 short film directed and written by Traidia Hylton. Produced during the early 1990s, the film emerged from the independent short-form cinema movement, which sought to explore intimate, character-driven narratives through a minimalist lens. It is noted for its meditative atmosphere and its focus on the psychological interplay between its small cast.
The film's visual design emphasizes stark, naturalistic lighting to evoke a sense of quiet isolation, a hallmark of Hylton's directorial style. While the work remains an obscure entry in the broader landscape of independent film, it is recognized by academic circles and short-film enthusiasts for its deliberate pacing and its exploration of themes regarding environmental domesticity and personal reflection.
