While traveling the realm of dreams, I discovered a small planet, Phantasmagoria...
Life on the Glassy Ocean, a snowman's journey to the south, and the day that the giant lightbulb finally shone. Whispers of a great meteor, the confessions of a planetarium technician, and experiments to raise an artificial moon.
Short stories that unearth transparent moments like crystals — a fusion of the fantastical world illustrated by Tamura Shigeru and the ambient music of Teshikai Utollo.

Where it came from
Phantasmagoria is a notable OVA production released by Tamura Shigeru Studio in the mid-1990s. It stands as a prime example of the studio's focus on surreal, non-narrative animation, which often favored atmospheric world-building over traditional dialogue-driven storytelling. The project emerged during a period of experimentation in the Japanese OVA market, where creators were given significant autonomy to explore abstract visual concepts that would have been difficult to greenlight for television.
The animation reflects Shigeru Tamura’s distinct artistic signature, characterized by whimsical, dreamlike landscapes and a nostalgic, painterly aesthetic. The design philosophy sought to evoke a sense of quiet wonder and existential curiosity rather than plot resolution. Upon its release, it was recognized by critics and niche animation enthusiasts as a sophisticated artistic endeavor, praised primarily for its innovative use of color and its departure from the high-octane conventions typical of 1990s anime.
