A Wolf is a Wolf

A Wolf is a Wolf, directed by Sergei Ovcharov, emerged from the late Soviet cinematic tradition during the period of Glasnost in the mid-1980s. The film reflects the era's shift toward more experimental and surrealist narratives, distancing itself from the rigid socialist realism of previous decades. It serves as a stylistic exploration of folk motifs, utilizing a dreamlike, theatrical aesthetic to examine human nature and societal archetypes through the lens of a classic predator-prey metaphor.

The film's visual design is heavily influenced by the distinctively stylized, almost stage-like direction Ovcharov is known for. He sought to strip away conventional cinematic naturalism, favoring compositions that mirror puppet theater or traditional folklore illustrations. Upon its release, the film was noted for its unconventional pacing and atmospheric density, receiving attention from critics interested in the evolving identity of Russian art-house cinema during a time of significant cultural transition.
